Welcome to Emily’s Simply Made Series! Each post features a craft that looks cute or is practical but is easy enough for even the uncraftiest of people. Cute DIY things are NOT just for the pros! You can do it too!
When we were decorating our new entryway shelf/coat hanger I wanted a few photos and some fun decor items. My husband had spent so much time designing and creating our huge (8 feet long!) shelf and I wanted to make it even more beautiful!
I used a few items I already had on hand from thrift and clearance shopping, but I needed a little piece of “art” that was a little taller to offset the lower pictures and decor. Since we had some really fun memorable pictures of our family and my husband and I together I wanted to add an ampersand (& sign) right in the middle. Our family is based on my husband and I joining together, and the ampersand is just a little fun way to represent our marriage, friendship and love!
Because I am a little obsessed with gold right now, choosing the color was no problem. Lucky for me, gold permanent markers had been on clearance before and I had picked them up knowing they would come in handy for SOMETHING and this was going to be it!
I gathered my markers, as well as a flat canvas (any canvas will do!) and some contact paper.
I then traced the ampersand (mirror image) onto the back of the contact paper and cut it out. You can freehand it, or print it from the computer and trace it that way.
Peel the contact paper off of the backing and stick it onto your canvas, making sure to press firmly on all of the open edges. Using a credit card to press down can help make sure it’s sealed well!
Start coloring in the open parts of your design
Then peel off the contact paper. Becasue the canvas has texture to it, you may end up with some bumpy looking lines in some parts. No worries. Just go over those areas with your marker tip to make a cleaner line!
Now you’re finished! Display for all to see!
This project works for ANY design you want to put on canvas! Get creative and make some gorgeous art for your own home!
