My family doesn’t have too many opportunities to get all together anymore. We live scattered all over the United States and the last time my parents and siblings all got together was over 6 years ago. When I get to see my family, it’s a big deal. It’s special. Every moment is appreciated.
Last year, almost an entire year ago, we lost my dad. He passed away just before Christmas. Our holidays just weren’t the same last year. The year before that we had been at my parents with our three boys and I watched in bliss as my dad loved on his “GRANDS” as he called them (he always capitalized it when he mentioned them in text). He watched Sound of Music with his grandsons, baked and decorated cookies all together and just enjoyed the time together so so much.
Ironically, the last time I talked to Dad was on Thanksgiving last year. I was so thankful for modern technology that day and every day since because we were able to talk via video across the country. We laughed, he talked to my boys and husband and while I was so thankful to see him on my computer, oh how I wish I could have been with him in person that day.
This year, we are focusing on Presence over Presents. It is SO important to spend time with the ones we love every chance we get. Our gifts to our children (and from my mom) this year are all experiences we can have together. We want to create as many memories with our kids as we can. Our gifts to my siblings and mom are ornaments made from one of my dad’s shirts. I cut strips out of his shirt (purple because he was a bishop) and wrapped it around small blocks of wood and topped it with buttons from the shirt. I hope it’s a loving reminder of the wonderful memories we all shared with my dad.
What would make this year even more special would be to have my whole family together, especially after all the loss we’ve felt this last year. Unfortunately, coordinating that is hard. But we want to help YOU coordinate it with your family!
