Rice Krispies Treats are right up there on my all-time favorite snack list (along with gummy bears and popcorn).
So when I recently stumbled upon an article about new twists on the classic treat, I eagerly filed it away for future creative snacking. The variations got me thinking about what I would do to the standard Rice Krispy Treat to enhance it.
As I pondered my favorite flavors, I kept coming back to the Whatchamacallit candy bar. It has everything I love: peanut butter, caramel, chocolate and crispy rice cereal. I decided I could easily make a homemade version. I did and it is DECADENT! Enjoy!
Ingredients
For bars:
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- One 10.5-oz bag marshmallows
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter (I prefer Jif)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
For caramel topping:
- ½ bag caramels (about 25 caramels), unwrapped
- ½ can (about 7 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
For chocolate topping:
• 1 cup milk chocolate chips
Directions
Step 1: On the stove top, melt caramels, condensed milk and butter until smooth.
Step 2: Melt marshmallows and butter in microwave in 45-second increments, stirring in between until smooth. Stir in peanut butter and vanilla.
Step 3: Stir Rice Krispies into marshmallow/peanut butter mixture and press into 9 x 13 baking dish.
Step 4: Spread caramel mixture over Rice Krispy bars.
Step 5: Allow caramel to set either on counter or in refrigerator (10-15 minutes). Melt chocolate chips in microwave for about a minute (check and stir periodically). Spread over top of caramel.
Step 6: Put treats in refrigerator until chocolate hardens (about 30-45 minutes).
