After a long day of work and being a mom, it’s sometimes hard to find ways to relax. As a single mom, coming home from teaching 6 to 7-year-olds all day to my own kids, I am exhausted by the end of the day! But there is always so much to do–dinner, shuttling children here or there, grocery shopping, laundry, grading papers, lesson plans, etc… Sometimes finding time to even sit down is a chore! That’s why I’m trying to make it a priority to relax more often in the evenings after my youngest is in bed. The laundry and dishes can wait–a mother needs time to unwind and relax. That’s where this list of ways for mom to relax comes in.

5 ways for mom to relax


We got rid of cable quite awhile ago. So sometimes I take an evening and (don’t judge) binge watch some of my old favorites or find a new series or movie on Netflix. Curling up under the blanket with some freshly popped popcorn, watching a non-kid show is like heaven after spending from 6:00 AM-7:30 PM with children all under the age of 7. It’s like my own little slice of adult heaven.

Bath, Book, Bed and Beyond

I know it sounds so cliche, but I love taking a book in the bath with me. I could easily spend an hour after putting my son to bed reading in a bubble bath before heading to bed. Once I curl up in bed, I tend to putz around on my phone or laptop for a little more “me” time.

Girl Time

I have to admit–often times, the last thing I want to do after putting my youngest to bed is leave the house. But heading out for some time with a close girl friend is sometimes exactly what I need. It gets me out of the house with a glass of wine in my hand, relaxing and talking about things that I don’t usually get the chance to talk about at home or work! So, even though you might never want to leave your house because you have 150 things to do and really, all you want to do is sleep, take some time to enjoy your friends and good company.

Hit the Sack

Once in awhile, I absolutely will go to bed early. There is nothing better than waking up fully refreshed for work the next day and actually feeling like you got the sleep you need. Sure, you will feel guilty leaving the dishes in the sink. But, guess what? They will still be there tomorrow (trust me on that one).

Get a Babysitter

Hire a babysitter for a few hours for an evening once a month. Don’t worry if you don’t have plans. Go treat yourself to a pedicure, go shopping for something new for yourself or meet up with some friends for a meal or drink. But make sure you are relaxing and taking time for you.
