This cute and easy Valentine’s Day craft is the perfect DIY project to make as an alternative to candy. These heart bugs on a leaf can be made with either barrettes to be used in your child’s hair or with a pin to create a brooch for clothing. When my daughter was in first grade, I made these for her entire class. Then, a couple of years ago, she worked with me to make them for her class for Valentine’s Day again because they were such a hit! With so many food allergies in our schools, making a wearable craft is a great alternative to the traditional chocolate for Valentine’s Day!
- Red and green foam
- Black and red sharpie
- Google eyes
- Hot glue gun
Cut a leaf shape out of the green foam. Then cut a heart shape out of the red foam to make the “bug”.
Make small black dots on your bug using the black sharpie. Use the hot glue gun to glue on two eyes.
Glue the bug to the leaf on the fat end of the leaf. On the skinny end, write the name of the person you’re making it for. Another option that we did the first time we made them is to use small, scrapbook letter stickers to spell your Valentine’s name.
Turn the leaf over. On the back, glue on the barrette or pin. The one we made for grandma was a pin for her shirt.
Let dry and give to your Valentine!
