We love thredUP here at Simply Real Moms. If you aren’t familiar with them they are basically an online consignment store. You can see a full description of how it works {here}. thredup came to us and asked if we would share their tips of some budget friendly family weekend getaways. How could we say no? These tips rock!

Act like a tourist – Growing up, we lived less than an hour from New York City, yet to this day, I have never visited the Statue of Liberty, explored Ellis Island or taken the elevator to the top of the Empire State Building.  My situation may be a little extreme, but I’m sure many of you can relate.  Funny how often times we opt to experience the rest of the world before taking advantage of what’s right in our backyard.  So why not save some gas money and act like a tourist in your own city or town for a weekend?  Do a little research and enjoy all it has to offer!  Chances are, there is a lot more to do than you ever imagined.

Explore Off Season – So, maybe Cape Cod isn’t the ideal vacation spot for January and February, BUT many of the resort hotels offer steeply discounted rates for the off-season months.  Do a little research and find a hotel with an indoor pool and pretend it’s summer!

Family Sleep Over!  Who says sleepovers have to be just for the kids?  Why not get in touch with those childhood/high school/college friends that you haven’t seen in a while and tell them you would love to come for a visit?  If you feel funny inviting yourself, you may want to extend the invitation for them to come visit you first.  Either way, though, catching up with old friends is a great way to spend the weekend that certainly doesn’t need to cost a lot of money.  As a bonus, it’s a great way for your kids to build new friendships with the kids of your friends!
