I love to find ways children can play with their food. Sounds weird, I know! But I’ve found if children are given to opportunity to be involved in the food-making process, they are more likely to eat it. Your child is sure to gobble up this yummy banana! The Very Banana Caterpillar is a fun, nutritional activity that’s great for a snack, and can work for children of all ages! I recently did this activity with a group of four- and five-year-olds and it went over very well!

Supplies and Ingredients:

  • Banana
  • Butter knife
  • Pretzels
  • Peanut butter
  • Raisins

  1. Cut the banana into many circles. Don’t be afraid to let children as young as three or four use the butter knife to cut it—using a butter knife to cut a banana is a great way to give a preschooler the chance to practice cutting skills!
  2. Add peanut butter to each circle to connect the banana slices.
  3. Add pretzel sticks as the caterpillar legs and raisins for the eyes.
And there you have it—The Very Banana Caterpillar!
