I have never been a fan of buying cough medicine from the store; too many ingredients on the labels I can’t pronounce and none of it actually helps you fight the cold, it just suppresses the symptoms. There is no need to run to the store for cough medicine when you can make your own at home! This recipe includes ingredients that will not only treat a terrible sore throat or cough, but all of the ingredients are known to help boost your immune system and they will help you fight the virus that gave you the cough in the first place.
My husband likes to call me a witch doctor, but I swear by this stuff. This recipe can be taken night or day and you will have no sleepiness or jitters like you would from other cold medicines. All of the ingredients will probably be right inside your kitchen pantry, so no need to run to the store. Give it a try the next time someone in your family comes down with a cough, you won’t be sorry!
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/4 tsp ginger
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp water
Directions:
Step 1. Mix all ingredients into a small bowl and stir until well combined.
Step 2. Use a medicine dropper to measure out 1 tbsp for treatment. Save the rest and take as needed every couple of hours to relieve and treat your systems.
*Please note, this recipe SHOULD NOT be used on infants under the age of 1 year old due to an increased risk of botulism which could lead to serious injury or possible death. You should also always consult your doctor first before treating you or your children with any home based remedy.
This is much safer alternative than the over the counter meds.
Use this last night on my 2yr old daughter. It worked great but was a little “hot” for her. Would it be okay to add more honey or something to take some of the heat away. We did a water chaser last night which worked and she still stopped coughing.
Arryn-thank you for your question! If she finds it a little too hot, then you certainly could just omit the cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper is known to be helpful for sore throats, but I know it can be a little too spicy for little ones! I sometimes forget that because my two year old son eats ridiculously spicy things all the time and he takes this without the bat of any eye! She also might have that reaction of the vinegar too; I know that is what I taste the most. Maybe try to reduce the vinegar and pepper a little and see if that helps her? I hope she feels better soon!
Is this ok to take while breastfeeding? I have read you have to be careful about “detoxing” while nursing because the toxins can go straight to your milk, which is what ACV helps do right? thanks!
This is safe for breastfeeding. It is all in small doses.
Thank you!!! I have been coughing several weeks. Nothing else. No fever etc.. I decided to try this. To my amazement literally my first spoonful I stopped coughing and slept!! I used pomegranate vinegar too. I like the taste and love this remedy. I’m going to share this one!!! Thank you from my heart!! It truly worked.
I had to include this note. I had a dry cough for weeks. But using this also helped clear out bacteria I must have had too in my lungs. It’s all coming out and it’s making me feel better too. This is a great combination. Thank you again.
