As a parent, we have many big decisions to make for our children. Some are no brainers, others take a lot of thought! One of the things I think about often is how the purchases I make for my son will become bigger and more important the older he gets.

One of the biggest? A car.

Whether or not you choose to buy your child his or her first car, you will no doubt be included in the decision. You want something safe for them, something affordable, but they want something that’s cool, modern and ready for a young adult looking to head out on their own.

If you are in that boat and looking for the car that fits for both of you, you HAVE to check out the Kia Soul!

I had the pleasure of driving one around for a while and I was really impressed. While the Soul is a little small (although not impossibly small) for a family, it is the PERFECT car for a high school or college student, and as a parent, you can check all of the essentials off of your list and feel safe with your son or daughter driving it!

Safety

Soul’s active safety systems are engineered to help you avoid accidents, and its passive systems are designed to help minimize injuries when they are unavoidable. This means that front to back and top to bottom, Soul is engineered to help enhance everyone’s well-being.

Keep you and your family safe with

  • 4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS)
  • 4-Wheel Disc Brakes
  • Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Dual Front Advanced Airbags
  • Dual Front Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Front & Rear 3-Point Seat Belts
  • Front Active Headrests
  • Full Length Side Curtain Airbags
  • Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH)

Appearance

The 2013 Kia Soul stands out in a crowd and is such a modern-looking car! It  comes in a variety of fun colors too, which makes it easy to pick one that fits you and your personality.

Fuel Economy

Finding a car with good mpg is crucial when your are on a budget, and you will LOVE that it gets 27/35 mpg! There’s even an eco setting in some that help to really stretch your gas dollars. The Eco package comes with many ways to conserve your gas, like low-rolling resistance tires and an Idle Stop and Go system, which turns the engine off when the car is stopped or idle! Way to save your gas!

Amazing Base Model Features

Usually, when buying a base model car, you are stuck with the bottom of the barrel features. Not with the Soul! Every model comes with must-have conveniences like Bluetooth capabilities (another safety feature!), audio and cruise control on the steering wheel, satellite radio, iPod connection, and so much more.

Available Upgrades

While the base model is above average and a great choice, Kia has some really amazing package upgrades that are worth checking out.

Audio Upgrade Package

  • HD Radio
  • Rear BackUp Camera (BEST I have seen!!)
  • Subwoofer/Amplifier
  • Light up Speakers (My son thought this was amazing. The front speakers light up in different colors at night!)
  • Auto on/off Headlights

ECO Package

  • Idle Stop & Go System
  • Low Rolling Resistance Tires
  • Battery

Power Sunroof w/Tilt & Fog Lights

  • Push Button Sunroof with available Tilt
  • Fog Lights for low-light conditions

Premium Package

  • Navigation/Traffic
  • Hands Free Keys with Push Button Start
  • Leather Heated Seats
  • Climate Control

Space

As a mom with three kids to tote around, this is really the only problem I saw. While we all fit comfortably, there isn’t much cargo space. A stroller barely fit, and there wasn’t room for much more.

But! There is a secret storage space under the floor of the cargo area that will fit a fair amount of extras too.

When the back seats are folded down, I couldn’t believe all the space there was to fit moving boxes or camping supplies!

Leg room was much more abundant than I assumed. For such a small-looking car, my long legs (I am 5’10”) fit with room to spare in the front AND back seats!

Affordability

This is what really takes the cake. With all of the standard features that come in the base model 2013 Kia Soul, you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that it starts at $14,400! A great deal for all of the features you receive, and affordable for the first-time car buyer too!

I had so much fun driving the Soul around! Hope you love it as well.
