We’ve all heard this classic quote, but is it true? Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away? Turns out maybe our moms were onto something; apples do have tons of excellent nutritional benefits. I’m not sure how accurate it is to say that apples will keep you out of the doctor’s office, but eating one a day will certainly improve your health.
This week’s challenge is to test the theory of eating an apple a day. Go out and buy seven apples for each of your family members this week and enjoy all of the wonderful healthy benefits this nutrient-packed fruit offers!
10 REASONS TO EAT AN APPLE A DAY
- Apples contain three to five grams of soluble fiber, which help keep you full longer.
- Apples help remove plaque off your teeth and freshen breath.
- They have a high water content, which helps flush toxins from the body.
- They’re low in calories and fat, which make them a perfect snack for dieters.
- Apples contain no sodium—great for people with high blood pressure.
- They help regulate blood sugar by slowly releasing it into the bloodstream.
- Apples help prevent heart disease and stroke as one of the richest sources of flavonoids. (http://www.benefitsofapples.com/).
- Apples provide a good source of vitamin C to combat colds and keep your immune system strong.
- Apples have been linked to lowering the risk of asthma. Researchers in the United Kingdom found that “people who ate at least two apples each week had a 22-32 percent lower risk of developing asthma than those who ate less of the fruit,” (Murray, M. & Pizzorno, J. (2005) The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods. New York, NY: Atria Books).
- Apples are easy to carry in your purse, which make them an easy, healthy snack to keep on hand for you and your kids—especially if you’re a busy mom on the go!
Apples are also inexpensive—at an average price of less than one dollar per pound, they’re not only good for your body, but also your wallet.
