We live in a time where “family” can mean so many different things to each person. Your family may not look or act like the family next door, and that’s ok!
My family is a semi-traditional family, but one modern thing we have going on is that we live everywhere around the country.
My family and my husband’s family are scattered around the nation, and our extended families are scattered even more beyond that. My children are growing up in a world where they “see” their grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins on the computer screen and talk to them over the phone, seeing them in person only for big events.
While some may not ever be able to begin to understand how my family can live so far from each other, it is our lives and we are happy with our modern life. As much as we would love to live next door to all of them (ok, maybe that’s a stretch) and we miss out on a lot of wonderful things in our extended family’s lives, we can’t imagine our lives differently right now! It is our world and we love it.
A modern take on family life is the exact story line of Netflix’s brand new series Grace and Frankie, a series from the co-creator of Friends starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston.
When Grace and Frankie’s husbands leave them after 20 years of marriage—to be with each other—the women find themselves facing a change that they never expected, but they shift their perspective to get through it together with the support of their new blended family and, of course, a sense of humor. It is the perfect example of how life can change unexpectedly and making the most of it and blending into it.
I binge watched the entire first season and I have to say that it is not to be missed. Netflix has outdone themselves with this series and the all star line up with familiar faces every time you turn around! It’s funny, emotional and raw at times but so well written and so perfectly casted!
What makes your family modern and unique?
Make sure to tune in and check out Grace and Frankie, now available to stream on Netflix!
