Acts of Kindness for Kids to Do
How exactly do children learn to be kind?
They learn it in many ways. They learn to be kind by watching how people are treating everyone around them, how they are being treated, through social media, etc… Other than learning by example, I feel the most important way a child can learn to be kind is by doing acts of kindness.
This can prove to be more difficult than it sounds, especially when you’re wanting to start acts of kindness for kids to do from an early age! You might find yourself wondering what acts of kindness for kids are appropriate for young children or at what age should I stop pushing acts of kindness for kids to do?
Once your child can walk and talk, it is never too early to start teaching acts of kindness to kids and it never stops! Sometimes, it might even get harder through the teenage years. Some of the earliest acts of kindness I taught my children were simply to hold the door with me and to let others pass through the door first. All a child needs to be able to for that act of kindness is stand! In this article, you will find acts of kindness for kids to do at various ages for strangers as well as family members or around the house.
Here is a list of Acts of Kindness for Kids to Do:
- Use manner words such as please, thank you, and you’re welcome
- Hold the door for others when entering and exiting rooms/buildings
- Always address adults by their formal names unless told otherwise
- Rake the leaves, brush snow off of the car, weed the garden
- Give flowers to a family member or neighbor (picked or store bought)
- Write a letter or draw a picture to send/give to a relative
- Invite a friend over to play
- SMILE!
- Go through old toys to donate
- Greet people by name-say hello along with their name while looking at the person (when I taught Pre-K 4, the students did this daily and I have carried it over into my 1st Grade classroom. So even young children can do this!)
- Every single day, tell someone, “I love you.”
Your child will learn by your example–so make sure you are leading a life of kindness and showing your child love and kindness as well! Smile at your child every day. Hug them. You will never have this day again. No matter how old your child is–smile, hug them and tell them you love them–every.single.day. Your kindness will pay off and become their kindness as well.
