Thank you Gerber Childrenswear for sponsoring this post

They say no baby is alike and that couldn’t be more true. I have three beautiful children but they have all been so different during the infant stage. My oldest was an incredible sleeper and started sleeping through the night at only 4 weeks old and my second would only wake up once to nurse. I thought I nailed this whole sleep schedule thing and never really understood why some of my mom friends were beyond exhausted.  Reality didn’t hit me until I had my 3rd. I knew raising children was hard and there would be some sleepless nights, but I never knew the challenges that can be faced during parenthood when you’re so sleep deprived . I officially turned into the mom I never said I would be. I’m lucky if I get a shower in every day, the mom bun is my staple hairstyle, I live in sweatpants, and I pretty much stay content in my own home because I’m too exhausted to do anything else. This isn’t the me I know and love, this is the me who literally would love a solid 4 hours of sleep one night.

I’ve spent a lot of time talking with my son’s pediatrician and other mom friends on helpful ways to get my son to sleep better at night and learn how to self comfort himself and honestly, these tips have become such a lifesaver for me. We aren’t 100% there, but are headed in the right direction. Instead of waking up every 1-2 hours, we are getting longer breaks. In fact, one night he even slept 6 hours, yes… SIX!

So for all you sleep deprived parents out there, here are some helpful tips to get your baby to sleep better at night.

Dedicate Time

You can’t try these tips and in 3 days give up. You also can’t try to help your baby sleep better if you only have a night here and there to dedicate to. You need to give yourself as much time as it takes, whether that is a week or two. Block out your evening/night activities and remind yourself how important and healthy it is that you sleep train so not only your baby sleeps, but that YOU finally get some sleep also.

Space Out Day Time Feedings

This is something our pediatrician told me to do and it has honestly helped so much. I’ve always nursed my son on demand, which meant he would eat anywhere from every 30 minutes – 2 hours, never going past the 2 hour mark. So it made a lot of sense as to why he would wake up that often to nurse in the middle of the night, he was used to doing that and it was a habit for him. Now that he is older and my milk has been established for quite some time, he doesn’t need to nurse as frequently, so I started to slowly space out his feedings. We went from every 2 hours to every 3 hours and as he starts to eat solids, we will be able to space them out even more.

Let Them Nap In Their Own Crib

Getting them familiar with their room and their bed will help nighttime a lot more. If they are unfamiliar with their space, they may get scared when they wake up at night not knowing where they are. Being able to help establish their crib with sleep will help in the long run.

Set A Bedtime Routine

I never had a routine with my older two and never realized how important this step was until I had a baby that needed a routine. Whatever time you establish bedtime at, work your routine around that. Start by doing bath, lavender lotion, jammies, a book, a bottle or nurse and then lay them down when they are drowsy. That’s key. My little one would always nurse himself to sleep and now when he gets to that point, I make sure to lay him in his crib still awake.

Your baby may cry and fuss, but just be there to rub their tummy and shush them in a quiet voice. You can even try a baby mobile or white noise to help.

Always Put Them In Sleepwear

This one goes with the routine, but it’s so important. Babies, need to establish play clothes from sleep clothes and if your baby is sleeping in a bodysuit they normally wear during the day, they may think it’s time to play when they wake up at night. Babies also like to feel comforted and warm. Yes, even during the summertime. Keep your house at a comfortable temperature and make sure your babies are in something they feel cozy in. We personally love and recommend Gerber Organic Collection at Buy Buy Baby.

gerber organic

Gerber is a brand that we all know, love, and trust. It’s a brand that has been around for generations and a brand my parents used with me. So it was a no-brainer that it would be a brand I use with my children.

Gerber came out with an Organic Collection line available exclusively at Buy Buy Baby that I am seriously in love with! Not only are the designs super trendy and adorable, but the quality is everything you’d expect and more.  Plus, it’s affordable with pieces all under $15.

It gets ridiculously hot here in the summertime, just yesterday it was 109 degrees out. Yes, you read that right. So why would I put my baby in long sleeved sleepwear? Easily. The collection is made with organic cotton that feels soft and lightweight on baby’s skin. My son also sweats a lot during his sleep and I noticed with the Gerber he is sweating a lot less.
