One of the most popular baby shower trends are diaper cakes. Not only is it giving the new mom-to-be an adorably packaged necessity, but it can be used as part of the baby shower decor. If you are planning on making a diaper cake, try sticking to the baby shower or nursery theme, that way the mom-to-be can place it in the nursery until it’s ready to be used.
Diaper cakes can seem to be a bit overwhelming, but when you break down the steps you realize just how simple they are to create and to customize. In sticking with our Milk and Cookies themed baby shower, we created a gorgeously modern and gender neutral diaper cake.
What you will need:
- 16″ cardboard cake round
- 93- sized 1-2 Huggies diapers (52 for the bottom layer, 27 for the middle layer, 17 on top) You can use this Huggies coupon for your purchase.
- 1 bottle of champagne or sparkling cider ( a special gift for the mom-to-be)
- 100 large rubber bands
- 3 wooden skewers
- 2 rolls of ribbon of your choice (3-4 yards)
- Hot Glue Gun/Hot Glue
Step 1: The first thing you will need to do is roll your diapers. Starting at the open end of the diaper, roll your diapers and then secure with a rubber band. Repeat this until all of your diapers are rolled and secured. 93 diapers may seem like a lot of diapers to roll, but it goes by fast.
Step 2: Once all the diapers are rolled and secured you will want to put together the base for your diapers to go around. Something we enjoy doing is putting a nice bottle of Champagne inside the diaper cake. Not only will it act like a support for the diaper cake, but it is a nice surprise for the mom-to-be when she is able to use the diapers and have a nice glass of champagne. After all, she deserves it! For the base, you will take your 16″ cake round and hot glue the bottom of the champagne bottle to the cake round.
Step 3: Now it’s time to start layering on the diapers. Keeping the seams of the diapers in towards the champagne bottle, line one layer of diapers around the champagne bottle and secure the layer by placing one large rubber band around the diapers and champagne bottle. Repeat this step until you have 3 rows of diapers for the bottom tier like the photo above. Since the bottom tier is a largest we found a trick that will help for the outer layer. Before trying to place the rubber band around the entire outer layer of diapers, place only a few diapers in the outer layer and slip the rubber band over. Then fill in the diapers into the rubber band until your outer layer is complete. We used 52 rolled diapers for this tier.
Step 4: The second tier of diapers is pretty much the same but now we add in skewers for extra support. Stick the skewers in the diaper cake as close to the champagne bottle as possible and poke the bottom of the skewer into the cake stand to secure. Now start layering on the diapers of your second tier the same way you did the bottom tier but only adding 2 rows of diapers like the picture above. We used 27 rolled diapers for this tier. Make sure when you are adding on the diapers to the second tier that you slip a diaper over each of the skewers.
Step 5: Now it is time to add on the top tier of your diaper cake. For this tier we used 17 rolled diapers.
Step 6: Add ribbon around your diaper cake tiers and hot glue to secure.
Step 7: Decorate the cake as you like (The fun part.) We included some different ways you can decorate for a milk and cookies themed diaper cake.
