For the last two months I have had the privilege of enjoying a membership with The California Wine Club. If you have’t read my first post on them, you can read it here.

My husband and I consider ourselves wine-o’s. We enjoy wine and a lot of it at that. By living near the Napa Valley in California we have been spoiled by some of the best wines in the world, but there are still so many we have yet to try or be introduced to. With The California Wine Club we no longer have to worry about what wines to buy because they pick the BEST mom-and-pop wineries from ALL over California and ship it right to your doorstep. So for all those wines you can’t find in the store or that you have no idea existed, they do all the research and bring you only the best.

For my first shipment I received some delicious wine from  Robledo, but for my second shipment we received award-winning wines from Daniel Gehrs, who is from the Santa Barbara County area. The two wines we received from Daniel Gehrs were their 2011 Chenin Blanc and their 2009 Merlot.

The Chenin Blanc received the Bronze, Silver and Gold Medal. This is a dry and fruity wine with a lovely aroma of greengage plums, springtime wild flowers and clover honey together with a refreshing mineral note. It is clean and fruity on the palate with ripe Bartlett pear and crenshaw melon flavors and a zesty finish. Perfect with seafood or mildly seasoned chicken.

The 2009 Merlot was my husband’s favorite. He is a bit of a Merlot snob, but could not get enough of this bottle. The Merlot received not only the Silver and Gold Medal, but the Double Gold as well! This Merlot is smooth on the palate and framed by easy tannins, a juicy, fruit-driven flavor, an aroma profile of black cherries, raspberries and warm, tanned leather with hints of cranberry and blueberry. It is delicious by itself, but also pairs wonderfully with meat dishes.

Worried about the fact you only like white wines or reds? Or maybe you are like me and love both? With a membership to The California Wine Club, you get to choose to only receive whites, reds or both! On average, wine clubs straight from wineries tend to be a little pricey (I’m speaking from first-hand experience!). But The California Wine Club is affordable, and the best way to really get to taste the best in California, support the “mom-and-pop” wineries and get some incredible varieties to try.

By getting a membership to The California Wine Club, not only are you getting to enjoy wines from all across California, but you are supporting the local wineries.

Want to sample some wine yourself? The California Wine Company is holding a giveaway on their site. There you can enter to win gifts including a three-month wine club membership for yourself or to send as a gift for the wine lover on your holiday list.
