I remember the first time I saw one of the new 2018 Toyota Camry’s on the road. It was one of those moments where I had to do a double take to make sure I was looking at the right car. The new Camry is not the same Camry we are used to seeing and I couldn’t be more impressed.
Just recently I had the chance to drive the 2018 Toyota Camry XSE V6 for a week. In those weeks we used the car as our main car, which meant the CUV was on vacation (in our driveway) and the Camry was well lived in with our family of 5. From school trips, errands, cruising town, and even a trip up to Ashland, OR., we put this Camry to the test.
When the Camry first pulled up on my driveway, I immediately noticed the front grille. It’s what really makes this redesign stand out. It’s bold and dynamic, and definitely one of my favorite exterior features of the car. I also love how the exterior looks a lot more sporty than previous years, especially with those 19″ Black Machined-Finish Alloy Wheels.
The interior is just as impressive. Talk about room. As a family of 5, we often find ourselves crammed when it comes to sedans, especially with a car seat. Not only did we have enough space, but heading up to Ashland, OR., we had 4 adults and our infant in the car and all rode completely comfortably, with ample room to even stretch out our legs.
The trunk is also the biggest space i’ve seen in a sedan. We were able to load up the stroller and our weekend bags with a lot of room for shopping while in Ashland.
Driving the 2018 Camry there are a lot of really cool features that made me feel safe on the road. Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Backup Camera with Dynamic Gridlines, Automatic High Beams, Head-Up Display, and a Pre-Collision System.
I’d like to say that I didn’t have to experience the last one, but I did. A car cut me off on the freeway and before I could slam on my brakes, the car alerted me while braking for me. While I know I would have been able to brake in time, I love knowing that if I was distracted, even for a split second, that my family would have been that much safer on the road with this feature. The roads can be a dangerous place and I’m glad Toyota included all the top safety features.
The 2018 Camry XSE is loaded with some impressive technology like Navigation, an 8-inch multimedia touch-screen, WiFi Connect powered by Verizon (which will support up to 5 devices), remote connect which is an app for you to start your car, lock and unlock, locate, etc., and a Qi-Compatiable wireless smartphone charging dock.
There was a lot of detail put into the Camry XSE that made being in the car enjoyable. From the front heated seats, ventilated back seats, driver focused design, and a panoramic roof, which really makes the Camry feel even more spacious and open. Plus, it was fun to open up the roof and take in the cool spring breeze.
The XSE V6 engine was extremely fun to drive. It boosted a lot of power which made me feel like I was driving a sports car, with the size of a family vehicle. With three drive options – Eco, Normal, and Sport – you can really maximize your driving preferences. During the curvy, mountain roads, Sport mode was a favorite; During our drive up to Ashland, we got the best MPG at 31.8 while on Eco mode.
To say we will miss the Camry would be an understatement. It makes a great vehicle no matter your needs, and I can honestly see it being a car we would buy when the time comes.
The 2018 Camy XSE V6 model that we drove retails for $38,230. However, the new Camry starts at just $23,495 with an estimated 29/41 mpg.
Huge thanks to Toyota for loaning us the car for review purposes.
